    Boolboonda Tunnel

    Boolboonda Tunnel is an abandoned heritage-listed railway tunnel. The tunnel is 192 metres (630 ft) in length making it the longest unsupported man-made tunnel in Queensland. Its construction represented an important engineering feat for rail transport in QLD. It was built from 1881 to 1884 by O'Rourke & McSharry. It is also known as Boolboonda Railway Tunnel and SEQ-6Q 1. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 24 September 1999.

    Mount Perry Gold Mining Town

    Mount Perry is a rural farming area, primarily raising cattle. Gold mining continues as an important industry. Evolution Mining owns and operates Mt Rawdon Mine which is a gold and silver mine with annual community tours. Mount Perry has historic copper workings and the Mount Perry Race Club runs horse racing events. The locality takes its name from Mount Perry pastoral run which was named in 1857. Originally there were two private towns known as Fife-Barnett and the town of Tenningering. Tenningering was renamed Mount Perry on 14 January 1915.

    Cania George National Park

    Are you on your way to Cania Gorge National Park? Pleasant Mountain Retreat is on the way and a natural overnight halfway stop from Brisbane and South East QLD. Cania Gorge is know as a preservation area for many valuable types of plant community including brigalow forest, eucalypt woodland, cypress pine woodland, dry rainforest and grassland. The park is home to more than 90 species of bird. Brush-tailed rock-wallabies and common bent-wing bats are also seen. Aboriginal people have lived in Cania Gorge for at least 7000 years. Freehand art on the sandstone walls is a reminder of their special way of life.

  • Pleasant Mountain Retreat

    Beautiful Betsy

    Take a half day trip from Pleasant Mountain Retreat to the nearby community of Monto and visit the Beautiful Betsy. The wreckage of "Beautiful Betsy" was not discovered until 49 years post WW2 on 2 August 1994, when park ranger, Mark Roe, was checking the results of a controlled burn-off in the Kroombit Tops National Park, about 80 kilometres from Gladstone. Standing on an escarpment, he saw something glinting in the sunlight about 800 metres north of his location. He found the wreckage of "Beautiful Betsy" which had crashed on the side of an unnamed hillside.
